Event Report – Sydney Spectrum Scale Usergroup October 2019

The annual Australian Usergroup was held just after Technical University (IBM Technical Symposium) on a lovely spring day on the Level 13 floor of IBM Australia North Sydney Offices (with sweeping views over Sydney water.

There were a range of attendees, from private and public organisations and a number of great presentations by request.

The agenda was:

Technical talk – Spectrum Scale Erasure Code Edition (ECE, a.k.a MESTOR) – Lin Feng – IBM

• Spectrum Scale and BDA update – Lin Feng – IBM

• Integrated Spectrum Scale backup, archive and HSM with HPE Data Management Framework (DMF) – HPE

• What is new in Spectrum Scale? What is new in ESS? Christopher D. Maestas – IBM

• Enabler for Containers V2, and Container Storage Interface(CSI) availability – Dale McCurdy – IBM

• Hosting SAP & Oracle unstructured data across 2 data centers with Spectrum Scale and AFM-DR Alexis Giral– SystemEthix

• Customer/User Site Reports and Open Discussion

A number of presentations we had explained how Spectrum Scale can be leveraged for this type of workload, plus a few excellent Spectrum Scale best practise and broad view direction presentations plus an excellent number of presentations from IBM China Labs experts on new features and fixes. The user talk by Jake and David from UQ is well worth a read, as is the user case from SystemEthix

Event report: SSUG @SCA18

What a great start to new Spectrum Scale usergroups in Singapore, held at Supercomputing Asia at Resorts World Convention Centre.
There were a range of attendees, from private and public organisations, from Managing Directors to HPC Specialists and System Administrators, attending from countries pan-Asia-Pacific – India to China and Japan, to New Zealand and Australia.

As the conference theme and stream included AI and Data Analytics and Machine Learning, we had quite a few developers and sys admins who run various analytics workload on scale, but are looking to see what is new.

Spectrum Scale User Group Singapore

The inaugural Spectrum Scale Usergroup Singapore will feature a number of Spectrum Scale (GPFS) experts presenting on a wide variety of topics on Spectrum Scale.

Date: Monday 26th March 2018

Venue: Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore

This event aims to provide you with the opportunity to hear the latest Spectrum Scale updates from the filesystem and storage experts as well as hear from other users and technical experts on their experiences and uses of Spectrum Scale.

Wrap up of the second Spectrum Scale user group in Australia – April 2017 – Sydney, Australia

Hi there, it has been a busy time for us here in Australia, and we have had some fantastic Usergroup events.
Apologies for not posting my blogs earlier.

I’d like to write about the event we had on the 26th and 27th April in Sydney.

Sydney saw our best-attended event so far with 29 registered attendees and speakers.

We had kind sponsorship from Mellanox and IBM Australia and we were hosted in the IBM offices in North Sydney, wonderfully close to good coffee and food and the train!

On Wednesday we kicked off with a fabulous whiskey and cheese night event hosted by Mellanox to allow some time to meet and discuss many aspects of operating Spectrum Scale, new projects and make connections nationally.

Many thanks to DDN for supporting this event in Brisbane.
IBM and DDN representatives will be at the meeting to cover various topics, and open dialogue between DDN and IBM and customers will be encouraged. As is the culture of the group, no marketing or sales pitches!
The agenda is being finalised, included in the day will be technical presentations on Spectrum Scale.
